The default supply option for larger customers has been a windfall for the
incumbent utilities. The default supply option flows through spot market
electricity prices to customers as well as the associated transportation and
delivery costs, and government rebates. That's the good news, especially
since commodity electricity prices have trended downward since 2001.
Unfortunately, the Administrative charges associated with the Default Supply
tariff are very high, and can increase your purchased
electricity commodity cost for a given month from 15-30% depending on the spot electricity prices. The Default Supply tariffs for
